Trip Overview Trip Overview

The Annapurna Highlights Trek is a diverse and rewarding trekking journey through the spectacular Annapurna region of Nepal, combining three of the region’s most scenic trekking experiences: Mardi Himal, Khopra Danda and Poon Hill. This carefully designed itinerary takes you through peaceful rhododendron forests, traditional Gurung and Magar villages, beautiful mountain landscapes and some of the finest Himalayan viewpoints in the Annapurna foothills. It is an excellent choice for travellers who want to experience the natural beauty, mountain culture and panoramic scenery of Nepal through one comprehensive trekking adventure.

The journey begins around Pokhara, the gateway to the Annapurna region, and gradually enters the peaceful mountain landscapes of the Annapurna foothills. The Mardi Himal Trek section leads through lush forests and traditional settlements towards the higher alpine terrain of Mardi Himal. As the trail gains elevation, the scenery changes from dense rhododendron and oak forests to open mountain landscapes, revealing impressive views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The higher viewpoints provide a memorable experience of walking close to the dramatic mountain amphitheatre of the Annapurna range.

Continuing through the Khopra Danda Trek section, the route moves into quieter and less-crowded parts of the Annapurna region. Khopra Danda is renowned for its exceptional mountain panorama, with views stretching towards Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, Fang and other Himalayan peaks. The ridge offers a peaceful setting above the surrounding valleys and provides a different perspective of the Annapurna landscape. Depending on the itinerary and trail conditions, the trek may also include a visit to Khayar Lake, a sacred high-altitude lake situated beneath the dramatic Annapurna mountains.

The final section of the journey incorporates the famous Poon Hill Trek, one of Nepal's classic short trekking experiences. The early-morning hike to Poon Hill provides a spectacular sunrise panorama across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, with peaks glowing in the changing morning light. The trail then descends through beautiful rhododendron forests and traditional mountain villages, offering opportunities to experience the lifestyle, hospitality and cultural traditions of local communities before continuing towards the lower Annapurna foothills.

One of the major attractions of the Annapurna Highlights Trek is the variety of landscapes experienced within a single journey. The trail passes through rhododendron and oak forests, terraced hillsides, alpine meadows, traditional villages and high mountain ridges, while each section provides a different perspective of the Himalayas. The combination of Mardi Himal, Khopra Danda and Poon Hill also allows trekkers to experience both quieter trails and the well-known viewpoints of the Annapurna region.

Throughout the trek, travellers stay in comfortable teahouses and mountain lodges, providing an opportunity to experience Nepal's traditional trekking culture while enjoying locally prepared meals and warm hospitality. The route also passes through communities where Gurung and Magar cultures remain an important part of everyday mountain life. The combination of natural scenery and cultural encounters makes this more than simply a mountain-view trek.

The Annapurna Highlights Trek is suitable for travellers who enjoy walking in the mountains and want a comprehensive introduction to the Annapurna trekking region without undertaking a technical mountaineering expedition. Although previous high-altitude trekking experience is not essential, the itinerary involves several consecutive days of walking, uphill and downhill sections, stone steps and gradual altitude gain. Good physical fitness, appropriate preparation and a comfortable walking pace are therefore recommended.

The best seasons for the Annapurna Highlights Trek are generally spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Spring brings colourful rhododendron blooms to the lower and middle sections of the trail, while autumn generally offers clear mountain views and pleasant trekking conditions. The trek can also be undertaken in other seasons with appropriate preparation, although weather and trail conditions can vary, particularly during the monsoon and winter months.

Combining Mardi Himal Trek, Khopra Danda Trek and Poon Hill Trek into one itinerary, the Annapurna Highlights Trek offers a complete and varied experience of the Annapurna foothills. From peaceful forest trails and traditional Himalayan villages to high ridges, spectacular sunrise viewpoints and close views of the world's great mountain ranges, this trek showcases the natural and cultural diversity that makes the Annapurna region one of Nepal's most popular trekking destinations.

Frequently Asked Questions

The currency of Nepal is officially recognized as the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Cash is the most commonly used form of payment, especially in remote areas and during treks. ATMs are available in major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, but may be limited or unavailable along trekking routes, so it’s best to carry sufficient cash in small denominations when heading into the mountains.

Yes, most visitors from various countries need a visa to enter Nepal. You can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at various land border crossings. Alternatively, you can apply online through Nepal's official immigration website. You can obtain a tourist visa with options for 15, 30, or 90-day stays. Chinese nationals are exempt from the visa fee.

To travel to Nepal, you must have a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity, a tourist visa (either obtained on arrival or pre-approved), and, in some cases, proof of your travel itinerary. While not mandatory, it is strongly recommended to carry additional supporting documents, such as travel insurance, flight details, hotel bookings, and vaccination records, especially if you're traveling to remote areas or planning trekking activities.

There is no need for mandatory vaccinations to enter Nepal. However, it is advisable to get vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Rabies, especially if you plan to visit remote areas. Additionally, COVID-19 vaccinations may be required based on current regulations, so it is recommended to check the latest travel advisories for Nepal before your departure.

The baggage allowance for domestic flights in Nepal varies depending on the route. For flights to mountain sectors, such as Lukla, Jomsom, and Dolpo, the typical baggage allowance is 10 kg (22 lbs) for checked luggage and 5 kg (11 lbs) for hand luggage. These routes are often used for trekking, so the luggage limits are generally more restrictive. On the other hand, for trunk routes connecting cities like Pokhara, Biratnagar, Bharatpur, Bhadrapur, Nepalgunj, and Janakpur, the allowance is typically higher. These flights allow 20 kg (44 lbs) for checked luggage and 5 kg (11 lbs) for hand luggage. For both types of routes, any excess baggage is subject to an additional charge, which is calculated per kilogram and should be paid directly at the airport.

When trekking the Annapurna Highlights Trek in Nepal, it is essential to have travel insurance that covers both low- and high-altitude trekking. Your insurance policy should include coverage for medical treatment, emergency evacuation, including helicopter rescue, search and rescue services, and trip cancellation or delays. The Annapurna region is relatively well developed and accessible compared with many remote Himalayan trekking areas, but the trek still involves risks such as altitude sickness, injuries, changing weather, and challenging mountain terrain. Make sure your policy specifically covers trekking up to the maximum altitude reached on your itinerary, including any optional high-altitude excursions, to avoid potential claim denials. The top insurance providers commonly considered by trekkers include UNIQA Insurance Group, Allianz, World Nomads, Cover-More, and the British Mountaineering Council (BMC). Always check the current terms and conditions, particularly altitude limits, helicopter evacuation, trekking activities, and exclusions. Choosing comprehensive trekking insurance provides important financial protection and greater peace of mind throughout your Annapurna Highlights Trek.

Proper preparation is key to ensuring an enjoyable and safe trekking experience. Start by training physically a few weeks in advance, focusing on cardio, endurance, and practicing hiking with a backpack to get used to carrying weight. This will help your body acclimate to the physical demands of the trek. It’s also important to break in your trekking boots before your trip. Wearing them during training hikes will help avoid blisters and discomfort. Familiarize yourself with your trekking gear (backpack, sleeping bag, trekking poles, etc.) and test everything to make sure it’s functional. Educate yourself about altitude sickness and how to prevent it. Learn the symptoms, stay hydrated, and take it slow at higher altitudes to reduce the risk. Make sure you gather the necessary trekking gear, such as layered clothing, waterproof gear, and a first-aid kit. Don’t forget sunscreen and headlamps for the evenings. Lastly, ensure all your travel documents (passport, trekking permits) and insurance are in order. Double-check that your insurance covers high-altitude trekking, medical emergencies, and evacuation.

Yes, altitude sickness is a common concern for treks above 3,000 meters. To reduce the risk, it is important to ascend slowly, take rest days to allow your body to adjust, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol. Your trekking itinerary will typically include rest days to help with acclimatization. Medications like Diamox may help prevent altitude sickness, but it is essential to consult your doctor before traveling to high-altitude destinations or using any medication.

The Annapurna region offers a wide variety of trekking routes, from short scenic hikes to challenging high-altitude adventures. Popular routes include the Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, Ghorepani Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, Khopra Ridge, and Tilicho Lake treks. Other well-known routes include Jomsom–Muktinath, Nar Phu Valley, and Sikles. These trails offer different combinations of Himalayan scenery, traditional mountain villages, diverse landscapes, and cultural experiences. The Annapurna Highlights Trek combines several of the region’s scenic highlights, including Mardi Himal, Muldai Peak, Khopra Danda, Khayer Lake, and Poon Hill.

The best seasons for the Annapurna Highlights Trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when the weather is generally stable, skies are clearer, and mountain visibility is excellent. Spring also brings colourful rhododendron forests, adding to the beauty of the trekking trails. Winter (December–February) offers clear mountain views but brings colder temperatures, particularly around Mardi Himal, Muldai Peak, Khopra Danda, and Khayer Lake. Summer and monsoon (June–August) bring rain, slippery trails, clouds, and possible landslides, making some sections more challenging. However, trekking can still be possible with suitable preparation and flexible planning.

The Annapurna Highlights Trek is a moderate to challenging trekking journey, suitable for travellers with a reasonable level of fitness and some previous hiking experience. The route includes steady uphill climbs, steep sections, stone steps, and varied mountain terrain, with comfortable teahouses available along the main trekking trails. The trek reaches high elevations, including Mardi Himal Viewpoint, Muldai Peak, Khopra Danda, and Khayer Lake, so proper acclimatization, a steady walking pace, and good hydration are important. The higher sections can be physically demanding, particularly around Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake. With its combination of Mardi Himal, Gurung villages, Muldai Peak, Khopra Danda, Khayer Lake, and Poon Hill, this trek offers an exceptional blend of Himalayan scenery, mountain culture, forests, and high-altitude landscapes. The full itinerary takes 18 days, including Kathmandu and Pokhara stays, transportation, and trekking days.

Temperatures on the Annapurna Highlights Trek vary significantly with altitude and season. Lower sections around Pokhara and the mountain villages are generally comfortable during the day, while temperatures become colder as you reach higher areas such as Mardi Himal, Muldai Peak, Khopra Danda, and Khayer Lake. During spring and autumn, daytime conditions are generally pleasant at lower and mid elevations, while nights and early mornings at higher elevations can fall below freezing. Winter (December–February) is considerably colder, especially around the higher viewpoints and Khayer Lake. We recommend packing warm layers, thermal clothing, gloves, a hat, waterproof clothing, and a good sleeping bag suitable for sub-zero temperatures.

We provide a detailed Annapurna Highlights Trek equipment checklist after booking. Essential items include a warm down jacket, thermal layers, a suitable sleeping bag, waterproof trekking boots, headlamp, gloves, warm hat, trekking poles, daypack, water bottle, sun protection, and a basic first-aid kit. Many trekking items can be rented or purchased in Kathmandu, making it convenient to prepare for the trek without bringing every item from home. Your guide or our team can also advise you on suitable equipment based on the season and trekking conditions.

For accurate and reliable maps, Himalayan Map House offers excellent trail maps for all major trekking regions in Nepal. As for guidebooks, "Trekking in the Nepal Himalaya" by Lonely Planet and the Cicerone series of trekking guides are highly recommended. These books provide in-depth route descriptions and valuable cultural context for trekkers.

Most trekking tour packages include an experienced guide, one porter for every two trekkers, necessary permits, domestic flights (such as Kathmandu to Lukla), private land transportation (if applicable), accommodation in teahouses, and three meals per day during the trek. Unlimited tea or coffee is also provided during breakfast. However, drinks (other than tea/coffee at breakfast), bottled water, extra beverages, personal gear, travel insurance, tips, and optional activities are typically not included.

Accommodation during the Annapurna Highlights Trek is mainly in locally operated teahouses and mountain lodges, offering simple, clean rooms with shared or private bathrooms depending on the location. Most teahouses provide comfortable beds, blankets, hot meals, and basic facilities, while higher-altitude areas such as Mardi Himal, Dobato, Khopra Danda, and Khayer Lake have more rustic accommodation and limited facilities. Staying in local teahouses provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere and a wonderful opportunity to experience Nepalese mountain hospitality, meet fellow trekkers, and interact with local communities. During the peak trekking seasons, accommodation at popular stops such as Ghandruk, Tadapani, Ghorepani, and Khopra Danda can become busy, so advance booking is recommended to ensure comfortable accommodation throughout the trek.

Three meals are generally provided each day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast and dinner are served at the teahouse or lodge where you stay overnight, while lunch is usually taken at a teahouse or local restaurant along the trail. Meals commonly include dal bhat, noodles, pasta, fried rice, soups, eggs, momos and vegetables. Tea and coffee are also available. Special dietary requirements can usually be arranged with advance notice.

Nepalese cuisine is known for its simplicity, freshness, and vibrant flavors. The national dish, dal bhat, consists of lentils, rice, vegetables, and pickles. Other popular dishes include momo (stuffed dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), sel roti (fried rice doughnut), and a wide range of curries. Vegetarian options are widely available and commonly enjoyed across the country.

Two main permits are generally required: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. The ACAP supports conservation and environmental protection within the Annapurna region, while the TIMS card helps maintain trekker records and safety. Both permits can be arranged in Kathmandu or Pokhara before starting the trek and should be carried throughout the journey, as they may be checked at various checkpoints along the route.

If you are unable to maintain the group’s pace due to fatigue, altitude or other difficulties, your guide will assess the situation and arrange appropriate support. This may include walking with you at a slower pace or arranging assistance from a porter or another team member. If necessary, the guide may recommend a rest day, route adjustment or emergency evacuation. Your safety and well-being are always the priority, and your guide will take appropriate action based on the situation.

Yes, you will encounter other trekkers on the Annapurna Highlights Trek, particularly during the peak trekking seasons of spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Popular sections such as Mardi Himal, Poon Hill, and parts of the Annapurna region can become busier during these periods. However, the route also includes quieter trails around Muldai Peak, Khopra Danda, and Khayer Lake, where you can enjoy a more peaceful Himalayan experience. Starting your walking days early and travelling outside the busiest periods can help you experience the trails, viewpoints, and mountain villages with fewer crowds.

You will be accompanied by a government-licensed trekking guide who manages daily logistics, provides local information, and supports your safety throughout the Annapurna Highlights Trek. For groups of up to six trekkers, one guide is generally sufficient, while larger groups may have additional guides. Porters normally carry the main luggage, with one porter for every two trekkers. Additional porters or assistant guides can be arranged for larger groups when required. Your trekking team is experienced in mountain safety, altitude awareness, local culture, route conditions, and trekking logistics, helping ensure a safe and comfortable trekking experience.

The Annapurna Highlights Trek is led by a government-licensed professional trekking guide with experience in the Annapurna region. Your guide is trained in first aid, mountain safety, altitude awareness, and emergency procedures, and has in-depth knowledge of the region’s trails, geography, culture, and local communities. English-speaking guides are available to ensure clear communication with international trekkers. Your guide will manage the daily trekking arrangements, monitor your wellbeing, assist with local logistics, and provide valuable insights into the Annapurna region, Gurung culture, Himalayan landscapes, and mountain communities, helping make your trek safe, informative, and enjoyable.

The cost of a guided trek in Nepal typically ranges from USD 30–100 per person per day, depending on the level of service, group size and trek itinerary. Tipping is customary in Nepal, and around USD 10 per trekker per day is a common guideline. As a general practice, 40% of the total tip is given to the guide and 60% is shared among the porters. When more than two porters are involved, the porter portion can be distributed proportionally according to their workload and responsibilities.

To confirm your trekking booking, we require a non-refundable deposit of USD 100 per trekker, along with payment for any required domestic flights, such as flights to Lukla. The advance payment allows us to secure flights, accommodation and other essential trekking arrangements. We prefer advance payments by bank transfer, while the remaining balance can generally be paid in cash in convertible currency accepted by Nepal Rastra Bank. Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a detailed itinerary and trekking gear checklist to help you prepare for your journey.

Yes, the Annapurna Highlights Trek can be customized according to your fitness level, available time, and personal interests. You can adjust the walking pace, add rest or acclimatization days, modify trekking distances, or include additional time in Kathmandu and Pokhara. The itinerary can also be tailored around the main highlights, including Mardi Himal, Ghandruk, Muldai Peak, Khopra Danda, Khayer Lake, and Poon Hill. Our team can recommend suitable adjustments based on your experience, preferred pace, travel dates, and overall trekking goals.

Cancellation and rescheduling policies vary by agency. Jagadamba Holidays offers partial refunds or trip credits for cancellations made in advance. However, permit fees and domestic flight tickets are non-refundable. Rescheduling is possible with prior notice and flexibility on dates. We recommend reviewing our specific cancellation policy before confirming your booking.
